THE OUD JOURNAL
Oud Wood, Oud Oil or Perfume?
They can share the word oud and still ask for three different ways of using them.

Start with the format you will actually use
A customer who wants fragrance in a room and a customer who wants a scent to wear are making different purchases. Before comparing origins or prices, decide whether you want wood for a burner, an oil, or a finished perfume. That one decision removes much of the confusion around oud names.
| Format | What to check | Usual starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Oud wood | Material, preparation, dimensions and weight | A suitable incense burner |
| Oud oil | Composition, quantity and use directions | A bottle labelled for its intended use |
| Oud perfume | Fragrance description, concentration and quantity | A finished fragrance you enjoy wearing |
What you are buying with wood
Agarwood is resin-bearing wood. With unperfumed oud, warming the material releases the fragrance of the wood and its resin. Pieces are sold in different cuts and sizes, so the photo, dimensions and net weight are useful parts of the listing.
Our oud wood collection includes names such as Muri, Salla and Zura. Those terms help describe products, but do not tell you everything about the batch. A small piece can be convenient to portion without being a lesser choice merely because it is small.
What Dehnal Oudh tells you
Dehnal Oudh, Dehn Al Oud and Dahn Al Oudh are spellings used around oud oil. Agarwood oil is commonly obtained through distillation. The name identifies a product family; the makerโs description still needs to explain whether a bottle contains pure agarwood oil or a blend.
Read the quantity and intended use of the particular bottle. Do not assume that every oil carrying oud in its name has the same formulation, or that every aromatic oil is suitable for skin. Browse Dehnal Oudh with those details in mind.
A perfume is a composition
A finished oud perfume can bring the oud character together with other notes. For example, the catalogue description for Oud Safrano names oud, saffron, nutmeg and amber. Those are fragrance notes; the list should not be read as a measurement of natural oud oil in the bottle.
If you enjoy a familiar style of perfume, use that preference to choose your first oud fragrance. You do not have to move to wood or oil to appreciate an oud note.
Where bakhoor fits
Bakhoor is an incense term used for different preparations. Oud muattar generally refers to scented wood. Read whether a product is unperfumed agarwood, perfumed chips or a blended incense preparation. Its name should not be used as a shortcut for its ingredients.
